FUTURES FILE column: Commodity prices soar on foreign growth, weaker ...

Overnight on Wednesday, we received some reassurance that the recent slowdown in the U.S. economy has not leaked into foreign economies. The biggest news came from Japan, where the economy grew at 3.7 percent in the fourth quarter, more than twice as fast as economists had expected.Because Japan's economy is largely export-based, this seemed to bode well for global growth and demand for Japanese goods. The other piece of overseas data came from Australia, where the unemployment rate fell to 4.1 percent, its lowest level since 1974. Then, on Thursday morning, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke stated that the Fed was standing ready to lower interest rates further in order to aid U.S. economic growth.Though the Fed has a dual mandate to encourage growth and fight inflation at the same time, it has become readily apparent in recent weeks that the current Fed chairman is focusing much more on growth.

GCC aims to track the performance of the Continuous Commodity Total Return Index, an equal weighted basket of 17 commodities (corn, wheat, soybeans, live cattle, lean hogs, gold, platinum, silver, copper, cocoa, coffee, sugar, cotton, orange juice, crude oil, heating oil and natural gas). Reuters America, LLC owns and calculates the Index.

"The American Stock Exchange is pleased to welcome and support GreenHaven as they enter the ETF marketplace," said Scott Ebner, Senior Vice President of the Amex's ETF marketplace. "GCC reflects a growing investor interest in commodity linked products."

Ashmead Pringle, President of GreenHaven Commodity Services, LLC, stated, "Increasingly, many investors have concluded that commodities are an asset class that should be represented in a balanced portfolio.

Oil Near $100 After Record Close

Oil futures on Wednesday pushed briefly past $101 a barrel after the U.S. Federal Reserve lowered its forecast for U.S. economic growth this year, convincing energy investors that the central bank will slash interest rates further.

"Investors are going into commodities for a safe haven, because they think commodities may perform better than equities and also may be hedges against inflation," said Victor Shum, an energy analyst with Purvin & Gertz in Singapore.

A Stock Sweeter Than Corn Syrup

COKE BOTTLERS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD have quenched investors' thirst for profits in recent years.

Shares of Greece's Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling, for example, have risen 51% over the past two years, and Mexico's Coca-Cola Femsa's shares are up 42%. But the real thing for future gains is likely to be Chile's Embotelladora Andina.

Andina bottles soft drinks and juices in Chile, Argentina and Brazil and has rights to Coca-Cola in all three countries. Over the past three years, the company has posted earnings growth of 13% a year. Yet the stock is up just 13% over the same two-year period, and ...

Dallas soap opera heads to Carolina

Key stat: Cowboys lead NFC in total offense with 378.5 yards per game.

Fantasy factor: Cowboys' Marion Barber, who rushed for two TDs in the last meeting, is averaging 4.9 yards per carry and may have to carry load. DeAngelo Williams, who ran for a 35-yard score in upset of Seahawks last week, doing more for Panthers.

The Buzz: Tony Romo's thumb injury may limit Cowboys' offense, but Panthers going with undrafted rookie Matt Moore at quarterback. Cowboys need to at least stay even with Packers to get home field throughout NFC playoffs.

The Pick: Cowboys 24, Panthers 10.

Feds looking into alleged metro Ponzi scheme

Federal agents are investigating several people suspected of running a fraudulent investment scheme that helped pay for stock market day trading and gambling trips to Las Vegas.

The alleged scheme used a number of Twin Cities business entities and is believed to have tapped more than 200 investors nationwide for at least $10.9 million, according to a sworn statement filed this month in Minneapolis federal court to obtain three search warrants.

U.S. Postal Inspector Rob Strande, who filed the statement, said the losses have not been determined, but that they could be substantial.

Strande said in the affidavit that the suspects solicited investors by promising returns of 20 to 2,200 percent over the course of one to 18 months. Potential investors were told that their money would go to unspecified ventures -- including gold, diamonds and oil commodities -- he said.
