He's invested in deals where others haven't seen value, and the whole nature of those investors is that sometimes they get it right and sometimes they get it wrong. Guy has obviously seen some value at EMI." The big question, as much for the listening public as for the rockers who have had it so good for so long, is where? Founded in 1931 as Electrical and Musical Industries, EMI has been one of the glories of the British entertainment scene, boasting on its roster the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Queen and the Sex Pistols. But the good times ended long ago, and the company's recent history has been a succession of crises. In 2001, it signed Mariah Carey, the five-octave human wonder, to a record breaking, five-album contract, but after her first effort flopped had to pay her £35 million to go away again.
Swan blames inflation rise on previous govt
Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan has used today's inflation figures to attack the previous Howard Government's economic record. The Consumer Price Index has risen a slightly higher than expected 0.9 per cent, driven by petrol prices, banking costs, rising rents and domestic holidays. That takes annual inflation to 3 per cent, which is right on the Reserve Bank's upper limit. Perhaps more importantly, the central bank's own two underlying measures have surged to 3.8 and 3.4 per cent. Today's cost of living figures from the Bureau of Statistics are seen as crucial ahead of next month's interest rates decision from the Reserve Bank. Mr Swan says elevated inflation is the Liberal Party's parting gift to Australian families. "Now it's pretty clear when you look at underlying inflation that these pressures have taken a long time to build," he said.
Father Foley Cape Cod abuse case settled For $550,000
The Archdiocese of Hartford agreed this week to pay $550,000 to a man who accused the Rev. Stephen Foley of using his position as Hartford County fire chaplain to sodomize him when he was a 14-year-old parishioner in Windsor Locks. Foley, who has been accused of abuse by at least 11 men since 1993 and was removed from public ministry in 2002, is still affiliated with the county fire organization he belonged to when the alleged assault occurred. He now holds the title of "chaplain emeritus" of the group, according to board members... The current president of the group is Windsor Locks Fire Chief Gary Ruggiero. Haber said Ruggiero sent an e-mail to the board of directors Friday criticizing the newspaper for publishing a story last Sunday that exposed Foley's continued use of a police-equipped Crown Victoria with flashing lights, sirens and scanners... abuse took place on a weekend when the boy and his friend accompanied Foley to a home on Cape Cod, which Foley said was owned by his aunt, the brief said.
Takaishi named new Portland State coach
Kathleen Takaishi has been named the new women's golf coach at Portland State. Takaishi replaces Felicia Johnston, who announced her resignation in December. Johnston had been the Viking coach for seven seasons, leading them to three titles and earning three Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year honors. Takaishi had been the Oregon State women's assistant coach since February 2004. Prior to that, she worked for a season-and-a-half as the men's and women's assistant at UC Riverside. Takaishi was an All-American at Oregon State before graduating in 1999. She competed on the Futures Tour for three seasons. Takaishi also served as the director of operations for the 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Championship, which was hosted by Oregon State at Sunriver.
Gatland factor could signal new Wales love affair with Twickenham
I HATE Twickenham. It's not a loathing based around hackneyed images of Barbour-clad "hooray Henries" glugging champagne in the West car park. Nor is it a simplistic aversion to English rugby and it's spiritual home. No, it's much simpler than that. I hate the place because we keep on losing there. I've been to every England-Wales game at Twickers since 1990 and it's been the same story each time. The day has always followed the same depressing pattern. It takes forever to get up there, it takes forever to get back and in the middle you watch Wales lose. Everyone has been talking about the 1988 game this week and the memories of Jiffy jinking and Hadley's double. But, unfortunately, I wasn't there. So for me, Twickenham is inextricably linked with Welsh failure.
McCain: One of Us!
I forget, but think the whole thing was posted at the same time. ... P.P.S.: What happened to "Faggot-Guy"? I thought I was Faggot-Guy. You just can't rely on some people. ... 1:33 A.M. Thursday, April 12, 2007 That's the best she can do? The "shock and awe" approach--in which the enemy gets intimidated by an initial offensive flurry--will probably work as well for the alleged D.C. madam as it did in Iraq. ... Or maybe the theory has once again simply been misapplied, with the choice of an insufficiently shock-inspiring target. ... 9:54 P.M. Hugh Hewitt's after-action report on our recent radio debate tends to confirm my suspicions about him. He seems to think the "prospects of an amnesty light bill" are so strong opponents need to settle for some minimum demands.
